If you’ve yet to experience a HMRC inspection, you probably will in the future. At times, they randomly pick a business for inspection. However, they do make use of their intelligence to concentrate on certain businesses. Areas they examine include tax filing conduct and the type of enterprise you’re running.

Type of enquiry

In total, there are two forms of enquiry; aspect and full. The first is in respect of one section of a tax return. The latter has a wider range. It is possible for the first type to evolve into a full investigation. This all depends on what the initial questions reveal though.

When do enquiries start?

Each one will begin with HMRC providing a notice to a company. The document describes what it is they’re querying and what information they require. In nearly every situation, you’ll receive a deadline for responding. This is usually 30 days from the enquiry letter’s date.

How do you respond?

Once they have the letter, the taxpayer needs to respond in writing. You must supply the information and answer all of HMRC’s questions. HMRC will then either accept your response or ask additional questions. It’s reasonable to expect a reply in 30 to 60 days.

How long can enquiries last?

In terms of duration, enquiries can continue for 3 to 6 months. This is true even for the simplest of inspections. If it is a complex case it could last even longer. In addition it could take even more time if HMRC is busy with other investigations.

At Brian G Lonis & Co, we can help prepare you for any kind of enquiry or investigation. In addition, we can offer you tips for managing your taxes. The advice we provide will prove useful in the future and you can call on us any time for extra help.
